Human Rights And Its Effects On The Chinese Employees

Suicide, deaths, childhood labor, terrible working conditions, abuse of basic human rights. Can you guess who is responsible for the majority of this cruelty? A company we have become obscenely obsessed with for the past few years: Apple. It is the biggest and most well know multinational technology corporation. We keep their products in our back jean pockets all the way to our office desks. Behind their â€Å"updated† and â€Å"hip† technology lies a deep, disturbing, and dangerous truth. Millions of Apple’s employees are practically slaves by being treated like machines. This company has obscure intentions by trying to produce their goods no matter what the cost is. As it is illustrated by the article â€Å"In China, Human Costs Are Built into an iPad†, Charles Duhigg and David Barboza show the detrimental impact of this corporation upon its Chinese employees. Apple is now identified for its harmful working condition in its factories. Employees work excessive overtime without a single day off during the week as these sweatshops work all day, every day. To produce the merchandise efficiently and effectively, the workers stand at all hours of the day and leave with a decreasing amount of energy every passing day. The company provides most of its workers with the benefit of satisfying dorms. 70,000 Foxconn, Apple’s major manufacturing partner, workers are obligated to live with 20 other people in a slum three-bedroom apartment. Social Psychology The Study of Influences Essay - 1420 Words

Since the beginning of humanity, people have attempted to understand behavior. Rather it is a mother trying to understand her son adamant dislike for broccoli, or a psychologist trying to understand criminal behavior, â€Å"why† has always been a question that has been explored. Psychology, or the study of â€Å"why†, has been attempting to answer such questions for centuries. Although there are many answers (reflected in the number of schools of psychology), Social psychology attempts to explain the environmental factors that lead to a person behavior. By definition, Social Psychology is â€Å"the study of the manner in which the personality, attitudes, motivations, and behavior of the individual influence and are influenced by social groups†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦Following Aristotle ground breaking theories were the Sophists thinkers of Greece. They discussed the power of social and spiritual influences on the behavior of humans, as well as the effect o f socialization and learning upon the individual (Sharma Sharma, 1997). Aristotle and the Sophists sparked numerous theories in the connection between society (the social) and the individual. Although many have been debunked or disproven today, these arguments are believed to be the start of Social Psychology. Philosophical ideas like Aristotle’s and the Sophists slowly lead to the formation of non-experimental social psychology approaches. One major psychological concept that started the social branch of psychology was Volkerpsychologie. Volkerpsychologie, who’s main contributor was Wilhelm Wundt, dealt with â€Å"those mental products which are created by a community of human life and are, therefore, inexplicable in terms merely of individual consciousness since they presuppose the reciprocal action of many† (Manstead Hewstone, 1996). In simpler terms, Volkerpsychologie looked at cultures and how its components (i.e. its language, myths, and customs) affected the individual. It is believed that Wundt, who dedicated 10 journals to Volkerpsychologie, considered social phenomenon psychology like Volkerpsychologie as a subject that could not be experimentally studied, and needed to be â€Å"explored via historical methods† (Greenwood,Show MoreRelatedThe Study of Human Behavior in Given Situations1613 Words   |  7 PagesPsychology is a social science study that covers diverse subject topics and carries out different forms of research in order to understand the development and function of human beings. Wuthering Heights Meaning Of Love Essay - 1357 Words

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontà « is considered a great Victorian love story between various characters, but most famously, between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. As the novel is a tale of romance, the word love and other related words is used a great deal throughout. It is used to describe the emotions and sentiments of the various characters in relation to other characters. On the surface, love is perceived as something beautiful and amazing but this does not cover the complex layers that it contains. What makes it so elaborate are the develop characters that become involved with the word. Brontà « creates developed characters with personalities and uses the word love through their lens to demonstrate how they perceive and view love.†¦show more content†¦Yet there is a contradiction between the meaning of love that Catherine and Heathcliff communicate to one another in comparison to their actions. In society, when a person loves another person, it is a social norm that they get married to prove that they are committed to one another. However, Catherine refuses to marry Heathcliff despite the emotional and spiritual bond they share because marrying him would be beneath her. The sense of love between the two is so deep that for them not to be wed creates a confusion surrounding their meaning of love. Although the keyword love is used multiple times throughout the novel, one of the first moments it is used in a romantic notion is when Nelly asks Catherine if she loves Edgar. I question why the word love is not firstly used in the context of Catherine and Heathcliff; as they possess a very passionate love. The quote states: â€Å"‘First and foremost, do you love Mr. Edgar?’ ‘Who can help it? Of course I do,’ she answered† (69). However, there is a complication between the type of love that Nelly and Catherine imply. Nelly hopes that Catherine genuinely loves Edgar because she knows that Catherine is in love with Heathcliff. The love that Catherine knowingly possesses in relation to Edgar is selfish and shallow, yet marries him anyway. She marries Edgar because he is socially respectable; he is handsome, young, rich and because he loves her. Helping Others Rewards You free essay sample

You By: Christopher Prasetya Mulya 7E/05 What is ‘Helping’ means to you? Helping to me is doing something out of kindness of my heart and not expecting for return. Sometimes people don’t realize it, because they were to busy about their own bussiness and didn’t care to others. I’m sure all of you already heard the word ‘Helping’ before. It sounds very easy to do, but actually it’s very difficult indeed. Why? I’m sure when you saw homeless people in the street there is an eager desire to help them, but the problem is we didn’t have courage to translate it in the form of helping others. As a human being, we can’t deny that there must be a problem you are having in your life. From that statement it means that all people need help, but sometimes we don’t want to admit it. We will write a custom essay sample on Helping Others Rewards You or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When we help other people it could make a gigantic impact on their life. For example, I help my lazy friend to study so they can improve their score. By doing that, I could alter them from lazy become a dilligent student. One reason why we have to help others is that we could save other people life. When we donate some clothes that we didn’t use anymore to orphans, unwittingly I just helpped them so they could have new clothes to wear on. Another reason is because it’s beneficial for both side. For example, when we willing to teach our friend in Physics both side will be happy, our friend will be happy cause they can do the test and at the same time we will be more expert in Physics. So, why don’t we just establish a better world to live by helping each other? A person can’t change anything, but a bunch of people that have a high tolerance to others could make an alter in this world. Lets together build our dream place to stay!

Code of Ethics for Nurses free essay sample

What makes a code of ethics an important for nurses? Generally, a code of ethics serves and functions as a tool for professional self-definition. As nursing continues to strengthen its model of professionalism, the relationship between that model and a code of ethics must be seriously considered. The mere existence of a code provides a positive argument that a group self-identifies as â€Å"professional,† not just as occupational. In fact, the formulation of â€Å"a code of ethics itself is commonly taken to be one of the defining marks of a profession (Alexandra Woodruff, 1990). Professionals recognize that they must embrace specific responsibilities and obligations to those they serve to legitimately call themselves professionals. A code, then, functions as a reminder of these duties to both the practitioner and the public. Nurses in today’s health care environment are faced with multiple ethical challenges which are related either directly or indirectly to cost-conscious hospitals, managed care payment plans, nursing staffing problems, the looming nursing shortage, and complex medical conditions that affect not just individuals, but the whole communities. We will write a custom essay sample on Code of Ethics for Nurses or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In the current health care delivery system, the relationship between nurses and patients has been challenged more than ever. Nurses face â€Å"ethical issues and stresses in intra- professional and inter- professional relationships not envisioned in years past† (Walleck, 1989). The code is available to help nurses navigate this new â€Å"moral paradigm† in an era â€Å"when hospitals have become marketplaces† (Curtin, 2000). The nursing profession is challenged to assume a new mantle of leadership and relocate the patient at the center of health care. The Code is the promise that nurses are doing their best to provide care for their patients and their communities while supporting each other in the process, so that all nurses can fulfill their ethical and professional obligations, as well as meet their own professional and career goals. In the midst of these challenges, the Code of Ethics exists as concrete evidence of nursing’s thoughtful and considered ethical commitments. Although nurses are still committed to caring, they can no longer â€Å"care† at the expense of being disempowered in relationships and systems (ANA, 2001). Good Governance The American Nurses Association (ANA) is a national professional association. State law, rules, and regulations govern the practice of nursing, while the Code of Ethics guides nurses in the application of their professional skills and personal responsibilities. ANA is the only full- service professional organization representing the nation’s 2. million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent member associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public (ANA, 2001). Every state in the nation has its own board of nursing that g overn and monitor the practices of nurses within that state. Each state board of nursing have obligation to protect the public health, safety, and welfare through the safe and competent practice of nurses. It is governed by the state governor down to executive director of the board of nursing. Ethics of Social Purpose The evolution of Nursing’s Code of Ethics started back in 1893, the â€Å"Nightingale Pledge,† patterned after medicine’s Hippocratic Oath, understood as the first nursing code of ethics to the 2001 revised version of the code. It has always been fundamentally concerned with the principles of doing no harm, of benefiting others, of loyalty, and of truthfulness. The code has been focused on social justice and, in later versions, with the changing context of health care as well as with the autonomy of the patient and the nurse. What does respect for human dignity mean in health care and how will it be demonstrated? The concept of human dignity, flowing from the principle of respect, is expressed in numerous ways when nurses go about their work. The idea is based on the principle of respect for persons and is derived from the philosopher Immanuel Kant’s rationalist theory, as well the Judeo- Christian texts, that people should treat others in the same manner in which they desire to be treated: that persons should be treated as ends in themselves, not as means to an end. This attitude translates into respect for all people. Respecting all people means the nurse should honor human dignity in every encounter with every patient and other professionals. This can be expressed in small gestures. For example, the bedside nurse closes the room separation curtains while doing nursing care for patient privacy. It can also be expressed in large gestures, such as assuring patient autonomy through the establishment of conditions necessary to provide truly informed consent. According to the Code, â€Å"the nurse’s duty is to take action designed both to protect patients and to assure that the impaired individual receives assistance in regaining optimal function. † (ANA Code of Ethics, 2001). This is a form of patient advocacy and in some cases may result in whistle blowing.

Student Advice on College Interviews

When students think about college applications, there’s a natural list of things they all start stressing about: college research, financial aid, college essays, recommendations, and college interviews. Each element of the application may not be equally important, but they should all combine to make the most compelling application. One of the elements that is regarded with less importance is the college interview. Not every university conducts alumni interviews, and not every applicant will receive on either. So, don’t let this be a top concern of yours. In fact, they are usually very human conversations, and a chance for you to find out more about the university you applied and the alumni network. Take it from these students at Brown, Yale, Middlebury, Stanford and Georgetown who went through the application season just last year! mouse43Yale University ‘20I interviewed on-campus at Yale and had a disheartening experience. I showed up wearing jeans because the dress I had packed and planned to wear ripped last-minute in a rather inappropriate location. My interviewer also asked only one question about me. I had to force information about myself into the conversation - and maybe testing my assertiveness and resilience was his very intent -, but it was overall a very unproductive, non-educational experience and a waste of thirty minutes. But, I still got in early. Dont lose hope, and never count yourself out. Katherine2020 Brown University ‘20 I began to regret applying to Princeton after my interview. My interviewer was kind of a jerk, he came late and then, after hearing about my interests he was completely fixated on talking about my post-college plans. After I mentioned I was interested in Rabbinical school, he told me that I dont need to go to Princeton. And after talking to him, I certainly didnt want to! Naomi Cutler Middlebury College ‘20 I only interviewed with Middlebury because I was reluctant to reach out to other schools when visiting. Middlebury contacted me after my application was turned in and I accepted because I did not want to hurt my chances in any way. Although I have no idea if my interview had any influence on my acceptance, it was definitely a good life experience. I would recommend that students reach out at least to their top choice schools. Its also great practice for a job interview someday!Gw1998Stanford University ‘20I interviewed with most of the schools I applied to, but giving my experience for specific interviewers probably wont help because every interviewer is different! Overall, I think the interview should be a place where you can show your personality and your passion. Dont focus on your application details or just re-stating your EC list. Show why you joined those activities, what you feel about those activities. Demonstrate your interest in your major, or your intellectual curio sity. In my personal experience, the interviewers who are nicer are often less helpful because theyll let you get away with comfortably regurgitating your application details. If your interviewer doesnt push you to go further in exploring your interests and passions, make sure to bring it up yourself!Emmarhodes Georgetown University ‘20 I interviewed with Pomona, Georgetown, Brown, and Tufts. My Georgetown, Tufts, and Pomona interviews lasted about an hour. For the Georgetown one, we mainly talked about my extracurriculars, why I wanted to go to Georgetown, and any questions I had about the school. Tufts and Pomona were similar, but my Pomona interviewer asked some more unexpected questions like If you could give a TED Talk, what would it be? and What is your educational philosophy? which I was not really expecting. My Brown interview went the best because one of my extracurricular activities related to my interviewers job, so we bonded over that, and because my interviewer was just really nice! Before getting my decisions back I thought interviews were a big deal, so I was really worried that I missed the deadlines for signing up for a few of my interviews. In the end it didnt seem like the interviews made much difference, so I would look at them as a friendly conversation with someone getting to know you and not s tress about them! Use it as a chance to show them your personality and try to bring out stories that arent included in the rest of your application! Are youjust starting to build outyour college list? Make sure to search through profiles of students accepted to see essays, stats, and advice. See how they got in, and how you can too!

Vietnamese Culture essays

Vietnamese Culture essays Thesis Statement: The Vietnamese culture, a rich heritage on many different levels. Through exploring its religion, population, language, education, government, art and economics, an appreciation can be developed for the important contributions Vietnamese people make in American society. The early inhabitants of the area were Negritos. Some 4,000 years ago Austronesian (Indonesian) migrants from the north were moving into the area that is now North Vietnam. Later, Austro-Asiatic (Mon-Klimer and Maylayo-Polynesian) peoples arrived. Then, about 2500 years ago Viet (Yueh) and Tai peoples moved down from southern China. Out of this mixture of genes, languages, and cultures arose Van Lang, considered to have been the first Vietnamese Kingdom. In mid-third century B.C Van Lang was over run by and incorporated into another state to the north, forming the kingdom of Au Lac. Then Au Lac was incorporated into an even larger and more powerful state: Nam Viet. (Levison 284) Historically speaking, Vietnam (officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam as of 1992) has struggled for independence for at least two thousand years, primarily from China. There have been brief periods when the country has itself played the role of conqueror, but for the most part Vietnam has been a subject of conquest by French and Japanese Imperialists during the 1800s and 1900s and most recently by the United State during the Vietnam War (1959-75). But it has been communist China who shares its northern border with Vietnam that has had the greatest impact on Vietnam, an influence that is more than obvious in terms of philosophy, art, dress, politics, and most of all religion. As in China, the most widely practiced religion is Buddhism of the Mahyana (Mahyana means greater vehicle). Although its popularity is not as great as the form of Buddhism that is practiced in those parts of Burma, about two thirds of all Vietnamese are practicing Budd...
